Latest prints: Beer openers, big sledgehammer

I’ve finally successfully printed a life-sized sledgehammer.  It doesn’t look half bad:

It also took 7.5 hours to print with 5% infill.  But worth it?  Yes.  Next is spray-paint.

Also been printing some custom beer-bottle openers, based on this thing:

I created the text & modified the mesh in Maya, exported as obj, converted to stl via MeshLab, and converted to gcode in ReplicatorG.  Made the text black with a Sharpie 😉

New print: Mini-Sledgehammer
New gizmo: MakeyMakey

Hi: Great site…lots of cool tech & ideas!
How much raw material does your 3d printer use to make a object? For example, the bottle openers? Also, about how long does it take to print an object?

  1. The beer openers took around one hour to print I think. The big sledgehammer took around 7.5. As far as how much material, that’s a good question: You buy the 1kg (2.2 lbs) spools of filament, but what is printed is actually very light depending on how much “infill” you have. For example, the big sledgehammer it had 5% infill, meaning that it’s 95% hollow, 5% solid. I think I printed the bottle openers with at least 50% infill, to give them more strength. The ReplicatorG software proceduraly generates the hexagonal ‘infill’ pattern that scales based on the percent. The only way to really know for sure how much material was used would be to weigh them, but I don’t have a scale for values that small. But I’m pretty sure I could print hundreds of those bottle openers with one spool. In fact, this post here gives a pretty good idea of how much you can print:

They printed 392 chess pieces 😉

Hi what can i open this with so i can print it out.
I have a app called creo Parametric can that open it and print it?

  2. I’ve never used creo parametric, but that looks like design software, not print software: You could use that software to create stuff to print, but not use it to print that stuff. If you want to print it, it’s all based on what printer you have, and what software they recommend? For example, since I have a Makerbot Replicator, I print with the software Makerware, but I’ve also used ReplicatorG in the past.

Hey akeric i just printed it off but i live in Australia i tried to put a 10cent in it but it doesnt fit so could you make one for the 10cent coin and put the link here

  4. I have no idea the dimensions of a 10c coin in Australia: Sounds like a good project for you to learn a 3d modeling app :) There are many free ones out there.
