Project: MiniPOV3

At the 2008 Maker Faire I picked up this kit.  Figured it was finally time to give it a shot considering I have the whole week off from work :)

The MiniPOV3 can be found on ladyada.com’s site here:

What is it?  it’s a simple microcontroller that lights of a series of 8 LEDs, so that if you wave it around, or duct-tape it to a bicycle spoke, you’ll see an image left in space.

Overall the build process went really well.  The only annoying thing is I had to get a USB->serial converter cable that ran me $36 at Best Buy (2x the price of the kit)… could probably found it for less online, but I really wanted to get started since I had the time.

I got it working in the end, but currently have no easy way of taking a photo of it in action ;)   And when I do wave it about, it seems to be introducing characters that I didn’t program into it.  Odd.  but it was a fun couple-hour project that kept me busy.  Next up, I’ll have to get serious about adding it to my bicycle wheels ;)

I also have a complete set of pictures of the build on Flickr HERE.
